"THE VENTURES are considered the most influential, best-selling Instrumental Band in ROCK AND ROLL history.
Over 450 (LPs and CDs including compilations) Released Worldwide."

"THE VENTURES have written over 1000 tunes, and recorded over 3000 songs altogether! If they ever decide to play all of the songs that they've ever recorded, it would take almost 5 days - without a break - to play them all."

"While they predated the advent of the terms surf guitar and surf rock, and they do not consider themselves a surf music group, they were a major building block of instrumental guitar-driven music. "Guitar Player", in an article titled "20 Essential Rock Albums", cited elements of their 1960 "Walk, Don't Run - Album" (Dolton Records BLP-2003 (mono) / BST-8003 (stereo)) which presaged the coming surf trend."

"Most instrumental groups of the 1950s and '60s disappeared after one hit, but the longevity of The Ventures, the best-selling instrumental group of all time, demonstrated the enduring appeal of the genre as well as the band's skill in choosing recording material."

"It was the electric guitars that made the impression; that and the unique rhythmic pulse that Wilson and Bogle had developed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington, when they tried to make up for the fact that they didn't know any drummers, let alone pianists or sax players. At the time, most record companies wouldn't look at you if you had neither.
- "I played a very percussive rhythm-guitar style", Wilson says: "And Bob used to play with the whammy bar, and once in a white instead of a note he'd hit a chord and give it a little vibrato".
But the most distinctive element of The Ventures sound was that damped, rapidly picked descending glissando, which Japanese call "deke-deke-deke"."

"Through the nuances and characteristics of "THE VENTURES STYLE" in the songs, we can distinguish the unique songs played by them.
This is the "VENTURIZED SOUND". Enjoy !"

Sixty year after the release of their first hit, "Walk, Don't Run," the Ventures are considered the most influential, best-selling instrumental band in rock and roll history. To showcase the group's impact on pop culture, guitar players, and their worldwide fan base, the Grammy Museum(R) in Los Angeles, California has just announced Walk, Don't Run: 60 Years Of The Ventures, a new exhibit showcasting original items from the group's six-decade career including instruments, tour programs, never-before-seen photos, vinyl, and more.

The exhibit will open on Dec. 7, and will run until Aug. 3, 2020.

On Jan. 9, musician Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (who has been associated with the Ventures since the 1980's and has done recordings with them over the years), Fiona Taylor (Mel Taylor's widow and band manager), and other special guest to be announced soon will be at the museum to discuss stories behind the exhibit with Scott Goldman in the Clive Davis Theater.

"It's such an honor to have an exhibit dedicated to the Ventures at the Grammy Museum and be recognized for our impact on music history, " said Don Wilson, founding member of the band. "I like to think that, because we "Venturized" the music we recorded and played, we made it instantly recognizable as being the Ventures. We continue to do that, even today."

Harvey Kubernik and Don Wilson interview (2006)

Q: How did you find the Chet Atkins cover version of "Walk, Don't Run?"

A: My partner Bob Bogle had a Chet Atkins album Hi Fi In Focus. And Chet had song on it, "Walk, Don't Run," and we loved the melody. But Chet played it in a finger style, almost classical, almost jazz. And actually, it was written by a jazz guitarist Johnny Smith. Now, Johnny Smith's version we never heard. But we were really enamored by that particular song. And so, we couldn't play it like that. So, we started playing it in the clubs while we were moonlighting after our construction job. You weren't making any money playing. You got $5.00 a night and played four hours. We played Duane Eddy and a little bit of Chuck Berry. I grew up in the 1940s and loved big band stuff. I picked up trombone and played it all the way through high school.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band’s Secret Cajun Sauce: Country-Blues Twangster Gerry McGee

" Forget Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. It's well-known today as one of the most "WTF!!!" odd couples in rock' n' roll history: In the summer of 1967, guitar god Jimi Hendrix - still mostly unknown in the U.S. - signed on as the opening act for The Monkees. "...

..." However, the core band creating the soundtrack for the Monkees' TV show and first records were known as the Candy Store Prophets, fronted by singer-songwriters Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who together composed "Last Train to Clarksville," "(I'm Not Your" Steppin' Stone," and other Monkees hits (not to mention Fats Domino's million-selling "Be My Guest").

The Candy Store Prophets' rhythm section comprised drummer Billy Lewis, bassist Larry Taylor, a future Canned Heat member and longtime Tom Waits sideman, and guitarist Gerry McGee, a seasoned session musician and son of legendary Louisiana fiddler Dennis McGee, who has been called "the Rosetta Stone of Cajun music." [Note: McGee's first name is correctly spelled "Gerry," though his name often appears as "Jerry" in discographies.]

It was Gerry McGee who would go on to join another of the oddest matchups in rock history: In 1967, the Eunice, La., native who created the riffs for the Monkees' themesong and "Clarksville" was recruited to join Captain Beefheart's Magic Band when Ry Cooder quit in disgust after recording the landmark "Safe As Milk" LP. "...

..." "I probably started a guitar riff, like a country thing," McGee said of his role in contributing to the song, the sound of which would influence Beefheart's subsequent work, including his masterpiece "Trout Mask Replica" (#60 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The Top 500 Gratest Albums of All Time") "...

A VENTURES HERO DIES WHILE PLAYING ONSTAGE

"Ventures lead guitarist Gerry McGee has died while on tour in Japan.
Gerry joined the Ventures in the late '60s when Nokie Edwards got off the road, and he played lead on their 1969 radio smash, "Hawaii Five-O."

A message on Gerry's facebook page said:
"Legendary guitarist, composer, actor and Louisiana native, Gerry McGee, died today. He was on tour in Japan with the Ventures and suffered a heart attack onstage, then went into a coma. He was gigantic talent and great friend."

A great Tele player, McGee has long been part of the Ventures lineup that toured Japan, while the late Edwards (who died 18 months ago) and then Bob Spalding have led the US road trips.

RIP to Mr. McGee, who was 81 years old.

"Gerry McGee passes away October 12, 2019"

"It is with extreme sadness that I write this post. I was advised by Gerry's family this morning that he had passed away early this morning, California time, at approximately 4 p.m. in Japan on October 12. Gerry was on tour in Japan so that he could re-connect with his friends and fans, as it had been two years since his last tour with The Ventures which, as we know, was cut short for health issues. Gerry had been very much looking forward to his return to Japan and, the last time I spoke with him, he was really happy to set off on this tour.
Unfortunately, during his performance earlier this week, he had an apparent heart attack and was taken to the hospital in Tokyo where he remained in a coma until today. I have been contacted this week by so many of his fans from all over the world, wishing him well and sending prayers for him and his family. Of course, all of us - the Ventures family, group members and friends - have been waiting and hoping that, by some miracle, he would recover but that was not to be.

Gerry was known to us all as a long-standing member of The Ventures: he joined the group in 1968 and was a very important part of the band during the time when they had so many hit songs in Japan. Gerry was co-writer on 3 of the biggest hits The Ventures had in the Japanese market: "Ame No Midosuji", "Kyoto No Koi" and "Kyoto Bojo" (also known as Strangers in Midosuji, Expo 70 / Kyoto Doll, Reflections in a Palace Lake), as well as many others. He also co-wrote/arranged several of the titles on the "Joy" album and continued writing for The Ventures until very recently - "Santa Cruz" is one of Don's favorites. Gerry toured with the group from 1968-1971, then rejoined the group in the latter part of the 1980s and remained actively performing and recording with The Ventures until two years ago.

Gerry's career was very wide-ranging and his skill and musicianship was appreciated by many world-famous musicians. He was on the early Monkees' recordings (before the group members became musicians themselves), he worked with Elvis, Delaney and Bonnie, Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Kris Kristofferson, John Fogerty and many others. He received accolades from members of The Beatles to Liberace. he appeared in movies too - including "A Star in Born" with Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Streisand. "...

"Escape" Song (1966)

The "Escape" song is a Dan Hamilton (click for details) composition for The Ventures in 1966. He is the same author who also composed the song "Diamond Head" which in Japan reached the 1.850.000 copy mark.

This song is part of a track from the album "Go With The Ventures" (Dolton BST-8045) released in June, 1966. Producer: Joe Saraceno.

In this song the FUZZ effect was used by the lead guitarist Nokie Edwards.

"Fugitive" Song (1964)

"Fugitive" song was originally composed by Lou Josie (click here for details) and played by Jan Davis (click here) in 1964 (A&M 733) and then recorded by The Ventures in June 1964 (Dolton BST-8029 and BLP-2029) on the album "The Fabulous Ventures". Producer: Dick Glasser (click for biography)..

Coincidentally at this time in the United States was a television series on ABC Channel called "The Fugitive" (click here) which had four seasons and 120 episodes in total, from 1963 to 1966 in B&W and from 1966 to 1967 in color.

It was a thriller series starring David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble, a doctor who is unfairly sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. But on the way to death row the train goes out of control and he manages to escape. Thus began the search for the real killer and fleeing the police authorities.

This Series was nominated for five Emmy Awards and won the Emmy Award for "Best Drama Series"in 1966.

The Series may have stimulated the creation of this song, but it has no direct relation.

Check out the opening video of the series and recordings of Jan Davis and The Ventures.

Electric Guitar Pioneers THE VENTURES - How Much Do You Know?

* Transcript of the email sent by Staci on April 30, 2019.

"Stars On Guitars"
 New Movie About The Ventures
 Coming Soon!

Yes, it has been a couple of years since you've heard from us -- but we haven't stopped working on the film, not for a moment. Since our last email to you, we've filmed brand new interviews with Don Wilson, plus special guests Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, musician/actors like Billy Bob Thornton and Eric Roberts... they all want to tell the world about how The Ventures and my dad/co-founder of the band, Don Wilson, influenced them... and it's nearly time unleash all this creativity!

Directed by me, Staci Layne Wilson, with my dad, and brother and sister Tim Wilson and Jill Fairbanks producing, we promise this will be the best documentary we can possibly bring you.

Band:

Started by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle in 1959, The Ventures went from humble beginnings in Tacoma, WA., to worldwide chart-topping highs and inductees into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the #1 Bestselling INstrumental Rock Group of all time. Their hits include: Walk, Don't Run; Hawaii 5-O; Pipeline; Wipeout; Perfidia, and many other memorable tunes.

How did they do it, and what keeps them going as they celebrate their 60th year? Who among your favorite bandshave they influenced, and what are some of the most surprising facts about The Ventures? In this family-made film, a true labor of love and passion project, you will learn the answers to all those questions--and more.

We just need a little help to get over the finish line. Are you a journalist or a blogger? Would you like to publish a story or interview Don about the movie? Are you a fan of The Ventures? Please share with your fellow enthusiasts.

Here are the links to share or/and check out the story for yourself--this one is unique because it's the children of a musician joining together to create the ultimate tribute.

Another unique perspective is the female angle to the story-- yes, The Ventures are a guy's guitar band, but you may not know that my grandma, Josie Wilson, was one of the first womam record producers in history (she was even awarded an honorary Grammy in the 2000s) . She helped get The Ventures' name out there. What's more, there are many female musicians who cite The Ventures as influences--we have interviews with The Surfrajettes, The Neptunas, The Whys, and Nashville star Liz Brasher.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Please kindly take a moment to read it her.

Thank you!
Staci

I am a lover of all good music. My father was a pianist and at home we had piano and mandolin. In the 60s to 70s, when I was a child, my father took me weekly to watch and listen to the Classic Music concerts of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Municipal Theater of São Paulo (Brazil). At that time, we could only enter the theater with sober and classic clothes and leather shoes. - "A song can simply be played on the notes. A Bridge Called Love

It takes us back to brighter years,
to happier sunlit days,
and to precious moments
that will be with us always.

And these fond recollections
are treasured in the heart
to bring us always close to those
from whom we had to part.

There is a bridge of memories
from earth to Heaven above…
It keeps our dear ones near us
It’s the bridge that we call Love.
