[ ...Dave Davies! Singer, songwriter, guitarist, founding member of The Kinks!
My favorite member of The Kinks!
My favorite guitarist!
Dave Davies single-handedly changed Rock and Roll forever with “You Really Got Me.” There is rock before and after “You Really Got Me.”
And yeah, it’s a a great song. IT’S GREAT BECAUSE OF DAVE DAVIES.
First, you have the attack - the ‘power chord.’ Dave is generous and humble enough to gently push back on the idea that he ‘invented the power chord’ - he regularly credits Don Wilson of The Ventures as his inspiration in a rhythm attack on top three strings. That said, nobody had played chords like that, with a sound like that, before Dave Davies. Second, the sound - come on. The amp and how he slashed the speakers. The sound. That just driving, snarling sound. And third, the solo. The completely nuts solo. So there’s that legendary moment - the record is still thrilling ever time I hear it. And Dave played loads of great solos throughout the band’s career. Til The End of the Day has a great one. But Dave Davies is my favorite guitarist for how he always serves the song. How there is emotion in his playing. How he can hold back or go wild. I could list many many examples but here’s one: “Waterloo Sunset” Some might say the band’s best song. Certainly in anyone’s Top 10. Listen to what Dave does in that song. He is playing lead guitar throughout the whole thing and his parts are absolutely brilliant. Of course Dave is a great songwriter as well. Too many to list - “Strangers” and “Love Me Til The Sun Shines” are favorites. And then there’s his great singing. Great lead singer, raw, rough, emotional - or tender and vulnerable - or comic - or sexy - whatever the song calls for. And then of course his beautiful high harmony singing. A key component, a defining feature of the Kinks. Love Dave Davies!...]
